I AM LEGEND 2
The 2007 American post-apocalyptic action
thriller I Am Legend is based in part on Richard Matheson's 1954 novel of the
same name. Will Smith plays US Army virologist Robert Neville in the Francis
Lawrence-directed movie, which was based on a script by Akiva Goldsman and Mark
Protosevich. Neville is the last person left in New York, aside from nocturnal
mutants, after a virus that was first developed to treat cancer has killed out
most of humanity. Since Neville is resistant to the virus, he protects himself
from the dangerous mutants while trying to find a cure. After The Last Man on
Earth (1964) and The Omega Man (1971), this is the third feature-length
cinematic version of Matheson's book.
Warner Bros. started working on I Am Legend
in 1994, and while a number of actors and filmmakers were involved, the
script's financial issues caused the production to be postponed. Filming mostly
on location in New York City, including a $5 million scene at the Brooklyn
Bridge, started in 2006.
On December 14, 2007, I Am Legend was
released in the United States and Canada. It made $256 million at home and $329
million abroad, for a total of $585 million. This was the highest box office
opening for a non-Christmas movie released in the U.S. in December, not
accounting for inflation.
